Harvey Fierstein’s Speech from DEFYING INEQUALITY

February 24, 2009 by ·

Dear President Obama.

While fighting for the abolition of slavery, one politician qualified his stance, “I have never been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people.”

That politician was Abraham Lincoln. Obviously time and experience brought Mr Lincoln to what would have been called the extremist view; that freedom cannot be compromised just to appease the majority.
And so he made a grander gesture reminding us of “…a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal”. Passing a law would change the course of slavery, but those words changed the course of the history.

New York, NY, February 20, 2009 – The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today urged LGBT community members to make their voices heard as part of a growing chorus of public outrage over the New York Post’s decision to publish a racist cartoon by Sean Delonas linking the shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut with President Obama and the passage of the stimulus package.

The Feb. 18 cartoon depicts police having shot and killed a chimpanzee while making an implied reference to President Obama, saying, “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.” The cartoon has sparked widespread anger and outrage, and community leaders have coordinated ongoing protests of the New York Post.

Sean Delonas has been the subject of GLAAD Calls to Action and has been included in the Best & Worst of National News for his continued juvenile and defamatory treatments of LGBT issues. Most recently, he was named to GLAAD’s Worst Defamation of 2008 list.

The New York Post and News Corporation (which also owns Fox News Channel and the Wall Street Journal) have a long history of providing a platform for Delonas’ defamatory attacks. GLAAD has compiled a slideshow highlighting a selection of past anti-LGBT Delonas cartoons. (View it here.)

GLAAD is calling on our community members and allies to stand up and join those who are speaking out against the New York Post and News Corp.’s continuing promotion of Sean Delonas’ hateful defamation. Demand that News Corp. hold the New York Post and Delonas accountable for their defamatory representations, and that the Post stop providing a platform for such vile, abusive attacks.

California Supreme in 2 Weeks: Tell THREE! (Lambda Legal)

February 20, 2009 by ·

Dear Friend of Lambda Legal,

In two weeks, the California Supreme Court will hear a very important oral argument as LGBT legal organizations including Lambda Legal, NCLR and the ACLU fight in court to protect the California Constitution and the fundamental freedom to marry. While this courageous legal team represents our interests in court, we can all play a part in making the case for equality. We need to start talking.

We know that what changes hearts and minds and builds support for equality is having personal conversations that convey what it’s like to be LGBT, and why equality — particularly marriage equality — is so important.

Today we are asking you to tell three people about equality. It’s that simple. Whether you’re LGBT or straight, just start talking. Tell three people about what it means to be LGBT, or to care about someone who is. A group of LGBT organizations have come together to offer tips and information to help you start these conversations and a place to share your stories.

And we want to talk with you: Immediately after the oral argument on March 5, we will be hosting a telephone briefing for Lambda Legal members so that you can be among the first to know what happened inside the courtroom.

Join us on March 5 at 3 pm PST (6 pm EST) for a conversation about the oral argument in the Strauss v. Horton case challenging the validity of Prop 8 in California. Jenny Pizer, Lambda Legal’s National Marriage Project Director, and our Legal Director Jon Davidson will brief you on the “what” and the “why” as they discuss the latest developments in the case. Save the date — more information will follow about how to join the call!

Lambda Legal fights for LGBT equality in the courts, and your personal conversations outside of the courtroom are just as important to protecting love, liberty and equality for all LGBT people. Let’s get talking!

Just Give Me CASH! (Hints & Tips)

February 20, 2009 by ·

logo Just Give Me CASH! (Hints & Tips)

The standard etiquette provides that it is considered in VERY poor taste to ask for cash in lieu of/instead of gifts for your wedding.  Seriously.

So what’s a couple to do!?

Our friends at myregistry.com have come up with a marvelous, high-tech solution to replace the grapevine, whispers and calls made by others.  You CAN and should register your wedding and now you can ask for anything from any store on earth instead of being forced to choose from just one or two registries!

Think of it… you really want that LV case, but you also want that adorable widget from that barrel store but you also NEED that blender but you have to have that touchscreen phone AND there’s the honeymoon to pay for!  Do it all at MyRegistry.com!

Then your guests will manage to give you what you want and need.  They can buy any of those items OR EVEN chip in to the honeymoon fund!  You get want you desire.  You don’t violate wedding gifting protocol AND you come out smelling and looking like a rose of simple and unimpeachable perfection and innocence.

There’s a GREEN registry available too!  You can even send e-cards to announce your registry in style and good taste.  We think it’s totally worth checking out!  Tip of the week… Accomplished!

“What the heck do gays want? Recognition? Justification? They can get all the recognition and justification they want from man, but it will never stand for anything before God.”

February 19, 2009 by ·

That’s kinda’ like saying that my being gay is going to make Aardvarks stop eating ants or hornets to not sting again. It’s impossible. Aardvarks, and ants… birds and bees will never stop their nature. They cannot. It’s what they do. The same, I am quite certain, applies to heterosexual human beings.

Wisconsin governor proposes same-sex partnerships

February 19, 2009 by ·

MADISON, Wis. – Same-sex couples could form domestic partnerships and receive dozens of the same legal benefits as married people under a proposal by Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle.

Supporters say it’s a step forward for gay and lesbian couples who would get the right to visit one another in hospitals, make each other’s end-of-life decisions and inherit their partner’s homes and cars.

But critics question whether the plan conflicts with a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. One conservative group promised a lawsuit if it is approved.

Wisconsin would become the ninth state to offer same-sex couples protections through domestic partnerships or civil unions, according to gay rights groups. Two states allow gay marriage, while Wisconsin and 28 others have constitutional amendments banning it.

Researchers estimated 1,400 to 5,000 same-sex couples would register their relationships at county clerks offices in the first year. That’s based on other states’ experiences and U.S. Census Bureau data showing about 14,000 same-sex couples in Wisconsin.

Along with the inheritance and hospital protections, partners would qualify for medical leave from work to care for each other and not have to testify against each other in court.

As Californians came to Sacramento to talk to their legislators to pass two resolutions supporting the invalidation of Prop 8, The Assembly Judiciary Committee heard testimony on the house resolution to overturn Prop 8, HR 5 (Ammiano).

“This was one of the largest lobby days I have ever seen by any advocacy organization of any kind. The determination Lobby Day participants demonstrated in their commitment to fight Prop. 8 was quite impactful.”

2009 Lobby Day a huge success!
2009 Lobby Day a huge success!

Yesterday, EQCA hosted the largest LGBT lobby day in California’s history. The deep commitment by activists who travelled from every part of the state to Sacramento and then trudge through the rain to ensure that their voices were heard was truly inspirational.

We lobbied to show the broad support for passage of the two resolutions before the legislature authored by Senator Mark Leno and Assemblymember Tom Ammiano and sponsored by Equality California.

These resolutions will make it the policy of the California Legislature that Prop 8 —and any future measure that seeks to eliminate a fundamental right from a protected group of Californians —is an invalid revision of the Constitution and must be passed by a two-thirds vote of both the Senate and Assembly prior to being sent to the voters.

Civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, NCLR Legal Director Shannon Minter, both members of the Equality California Board of Directors, and I, testified in support of the measure at the Assembly Judiciary committee hearing.  We were joined by LGBT individuals and allies— who shared their personal stories at the hearingand leaders of labor, faith, grassroots and civil rights organizations.

The resolution passed by a 7 to 3 vote and now will move to the Assembly floor for a vote by the entire body. The Senate Judiciary committee is expected to soon take up the Senate resolution.

Please watch this video of the hearingThis is the work we do and a record of your friends and neighbors and fellow Californians creating the opportunities for all of us to win back marriage.

We also want to thank you for all of the work you’ve done in the past two weeks:

  • Sent over 750,000 letters urging the legislature to support overturning Prop 8
  • 36,000 people added their name to scroll on EQCA’s website to show their public support for the freedom to marry
  • Thousands of conversations with people who may not be supportive using through the new Tell 3 campaign: www.tell-three.org
  • Over $30,000 to support EQCA’s legislative work, including The Rally and Lobby Day to Overturn Prop 8
  • And the thousands of phone calls to key members of the Senate and Assembly Judiciary committees to pass the resolutions (so many that they disconnected the phones!)

Thank you to Assemblymember Tom Ammiano for his leadership and the members of the Assembly Judiciary Committee who voted in support of the resolution yesterday:

  • Chair Mike Feuer
  • Julia Brownley
  • Noreen Evans
  • Dave Jones
  • Paul Krekorian
  • Ted W. Lieu
  • William W. Monning

Thank you to LGBT Caucus members Assemblymember John A. Perez and Senator Mark Leno who joined the committee for the hearing.

And we also thank everyone who braved the rain to make Lobby Day such a success.  We are indebted to them for their commitment to the cause!

In solidarity,
